UPDATE: Since first publishing this post on 9/26/2019 my opinion of this service has changed. I will continue to leave the post up and other authors can try the service if they like, but I no longer use them.
Clicks no longer lead to sales. My first couple of times using this service it lead to a nice boost in my sales. The last couple of times I’ve used this I not only did not get a boost in sales, sales actually went down. (Not saying that was Book Raid’s fault, it just happened at the same time.)
Referrals I’ve sent via the affiliate link which I know for a fact have resulted in newsletter signups because I know the individuals personally, may or may not have been credited to my account as my dashboard has perpetually stated that no one has used my link. No response was received from Book Raid within a week of my inquiry. Book Raid eventually responded and stated that they had credited my account for the signups which I had driven to them, but because they had not updated my dashboard for me to see, I have no idea how many authors or readers signed up from my website.
Additional update 4/4/2020: Site now has an affiliate dashboard. Referralcredits for newsletter subscribers are $0.25 per subscriber and referrals for authors who sign up to pay the site are $0.01.
I’m not saying this is a bad service. It is just no longer financially viable to pay more for marketing than I receive in sales. The email list is still a great way to receive free or discounted books from Amazon. Below is my original post.
I love Book Raid. If a self-published author doesn’t have a whole lot of money for advertising and has a kind of niche-subject book which doesn’t get a whole lot of sales, Book Raid is a great option to get a little bit of sales lift. This service only advertises discounted books and only charges for people who click the advertisement which has been sent out in their targeted email newsletter. What this means is that you will not be charged for all the people who deleted the newsletter unopened or who chose someone else book to look at instead. And, the people looking at your book are going to be interested in the genre of the book you are advertising.
Every once in a while, I will use the site while running a sale to help get the word out. I always get purchases which exceed what I’m charged per click, which varies depending on the discounted price of the book. The blurb can only be 400 characters which I find means I can experiment with wording every time I set a new sale to help me find the best advertising. Would I use this again? Absolutely. The author dashboard is user friendly and I haven’t had a bad experience yet. Should other self-published authors try it out? That’s up to you. The affiliate link doesn’t pay out cash to authors, it gives them credit toward future advertising campaigns for each reader who signs up to receive notification of book sales and every author who registers with the site for advertising.
